June 16 - Supply

You are my God and You shall supply all my need according to your riches in glory by Christ Jesus.   Philippians 4:19

So Apple and AT&T's servers went down yesterday shortly after pre-ordering opened for the new iPhone 4.  They were swamped with pre-orders early and couldn't keep up with the demand.

Economics is all about supply and demand.  And even though Apple has to be concerned on the one hand because they didn't plan well enough, they have to be thrilled on the other hand because the demand is so high for their product.

In the spiritual realm, supply and demand take on a whole new meaning.   God never has to worry about running out on the supply side.  He never has to wonder if He is prepared to take care of us.  His promise to supply all our needs is never-ending.

Our issue is on the demand side.

What do you think about that?

Supply and demand are basics of economics, often referred to as Economics 101. Any comprehension of how market forces work, how prices are determined, etc begin with Econ 101 Supply and Demand.

Did you know that the price of almost anything is NOT determined by how much it costs to make? The price is based on what people will pay for it. As more people want (aka demand) something, if the supply of it doesn’t increase, then the price will go up until enough folks decide that’s too much $$ and drop their demand. Then you have equilibrium, where the demand is matched to the supply. It’s not really complicated.

Timing also affects demand, as Rick pointed out. Those eager-beaver iPhone 4 early adopters created a huge artificial demand bubble, one that if spread out over a longer period of time wouldn’t have created the problems they saw yesterday. Some may have even decided with that extra time to reconsider, that having one really wasn’t necessary at all.

Obviously God doesn’t have bandwidth issues, but we often want our demand fulfilled NOW, usually because we failed to anticipate the mess we were getting ourselves into… What happens then is the fulfillment process that God uses, often letting HIS natural processes work themselves out on HIS schedule, OUR servers crash. We then get further consumed by the frustration of not getting any response when if we had taken more time we might have realized that our demand was not even necessary.

Yes, the problem is on our side: the demand side. Our poor timing, lack of patience and self-centered planning prevents us from seeing that there is pleny of supply available. And it isn’t that there is too much demand; God’s supply of what we NEED is infinite.

But that artifical bubble of early-adopter gotta-have-it NOW demand (aka selfishness) on our side creates all of our problems. We demand things that we don't really need on a delivery schedule that isn't offered.

And then we say it's God's fault.

    ...that's what I think....

  2. I'm just floored at how God can do what He does and that is to supply all our needs thanks to the glorious riches that Jesus Christ did for us. I've wondered why we deal with suffering and why it feels like God is leaving us; however, I'm glad that I have the humble confidence that God will provide. I don't know how, but he does and that's good enough reason for me.
