A family affair - Chapter 19

Several verses in this chapter speak to family relationships - for better or for worse.  Family can be a tricky thing to navigate.

Which verses struck you as profound as you searched through this chapter?

  1. Vs. 2 - "It is not good to have zeal without knowledge,
    nor to be hasty and miss the way."
    Vs. 11 - "A man's wisdom gives him patience;
    it is to his glory to overlook an offense."
    Vs. 15 - "Laziness brings on a deep sleep,
    and the shiftless man goes hungry."

    This morning I have been struck with the balance between laziness, busy-ness, hastiness, and patience.

    I was thinking about this: No one would say Jesus was lazy, but when did he ever HURRY? I am overwhelmed with that thought! The proverbs are full of calls toward patience and work, but they also rail against hastiness, busy-ness, and laziness.

    I suppose I must ask you God again for supernatural balance. Show me the balance between hard work and busy-ness, between laziness and patience.

  2. "A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense." Proverbs 19:11

    This verse stood out to me... and the phrase "it is to his glory to overlook an offense." And then I read this blog entry, "A Time to Not Answer," written by the son of a friend:

    Is God trying to get a point across to me?

  3. Verse 4--sounds and looks like something that I'm witnessing in my own family. Verse 9--I need some major forgiveness in that department. Verse 11--I need more of that(patience, that is). Verse 16--I need more instruction and less contempt. Verse 17--I love this. Verse 19--my temper has cost me in some areas of my life. Verse 20--I need to be a better listener. Verse 21--I want to let His purpose live in me and I want His provision to be carried out in my life. LORD, please help me be more patient. I repent of becoming hot-headed and not being a better listener. More importantly, I want to do a better job of being a doer of your Word, not just a hearer only. Amen.
